A
relatively new technology in the domestic technology arena is the
IP Video Streamer. This makes it possible to take locally
generated composite or S-video and audio content and encode it
using either Windows Media Encoder or similar software - or a
purpose built hardware device like the Axis IP video
streamer.
PC Video Displays are making their way into our homes.
From the computers in the study to the kitchen laptop, the media
room display and wireless 802.11g tablets for control - we are able
to take video from cameras, DVS's satellite decoders etc and make
that available anywhere we have a PC Screen.
An excellent example of this technology in action is the use of
a streaming camera in a babies room - dad can keep an eye on it
from the laptop in the kitchen - and mum can check in from the
office whenever she likes. The logical extension of this
scenario is the ability to contract a third party 'ipnanny' service
as a third set of eyes who could call, text or email if further
attention was required.
The 'ipnanny' scenario is a good example in itself of the
flexibility of the smarthome to respond to the changing
requirements of the occupants. Even if this application was
not envisaged as the house was being built - the presence of a
smart wiring system would make it easily possible to roll out at
any time.
