Chose a few powerpoints around your
house to be centrally controlled - these
come in handy for lamps, electric pet
blankets etc.

Usually uncontrolled, sometimes a
certain powerpoint or points will be nominated for control or
dimming for the connection of free-standing lamps or similar
equipment. If in doubt, wire it separately so you have a
choice in the future.
